For years, Carla Cavalcanti appeared on Brazilian television with a job that required her to report other people’s stories. Then, during the 1990s, the attention turned toward her.

Her relationship with Brazilian football star Renato Gaúcho, also known as Renato Portaluppi, pushed the journalist into celebrity news. Their daughter, Carolina “Carol” Portaluppi, later became a public figure herself. Carla reacted to the sudden attention in an unusual way. She left television.

That decision explains much of her later life. She had already worked as a reporter, news anchor, television presenter, and communications professional. Yet she chose privacy at the point when her name was becoming more familiar to the public.

Unlike many people linked to Brazilian football celebrities, Carla did not try to turn that attention into a second career. Quite the opposite. She became far less visible after leaving television.

Her public story is therefore split into two parts. First came a busy television career involving reporting, breaking news, anchoring, and live events. After that came communications work and a much quieter life centered heavily on raising her daughter.

There are few reliable public records about Carla’s childhood or family background. Her better documented history begins with journalism.

She Started Behind the Camera at Rede Manchete

Her career did not begin at the anchor desk.

Carla recalled starting at TV Manchete as an apuradora, a newsroom role focused on checking information and developing stories. She worked during the night and early morning hours. Some assignments involved social events, but plans could change fast when serious news broke.

That meant switching from a scheduled event to a crime scene with little warning.

In a 2015 interview with UOL, she remembered being sent to cover violent incidents and massacres. Seeing such scenes at close range was difficult, she said, but it was part of the work. It is a less glamorous picture of television journalism than the one viewers saw once she reached the studio.

She later worked as a reporter before moving into presenting.

That background matters. Carla was not simply a celebrity who happened to get a television job. She had already worked through several parts of a newsroom before viewers began recognizing her face.

The move to presenting brought Carla into a much more visible role.

At Rede Manchete, she anchored the Edição da Tarde news program. She also said the network used her across its other newscasts when needed. Her work was not limited to sitting behind a desk either. She presented special broadcasts tied to events such as Carnival and end-of-year programming.

Historical material on Rede Manchete also lists a presenter named Carla Cavalcanti among the people associated with Manchete Esportiva.

Her career then expanded beyond Manchete.

Carla said she presented a local newscast for TV Record and worked on five programs at TVE. By her own account, the television years were among the happiest periods of her professional life.

She also had ideas about how television news should sound. Even under the more formal presentation style common at the time, Carla sometimes went beyond prepared scripts and added her own comments. Years later, she welcomed the shift toward presenters speaking to viewers in a more natural manner.

Then her private life became a headline.

Carla became involved with Renato Gaúcho during one of the most visible periods of his football career.

Renato was already a major name in Brazil. He had played for clubs including Grêmio, Flamengo, Fluminense, and Cruzeiro, as well as the Brazilian national team. Fame followed him well beyond the pitch.

The relationship attracted press attention because Renato was married at the time. UOL reported that the story became especially public when Carla became pregnant while he was playing for Flamengo.

Carla later explained that becoming part of the news changed how she felt about presenting it. She did not believe it was right to keep working as a news presenter while her own personal life had become a regular media subject.

So she walked away from television.

It was a costly choice in career terms. Carol later said she believed her mother should never have left the profession. Still, she understood why Carla wanted distance from the judgments surrounding the relationship and pregnancy.

Becoming Carol Portaluppi’s Mother

Carolina Portaluppi was born in Rio de Janeiro on May 21, 1994. She is the daughter of Carla and Renato.

Carla’s own account of motherhood is fairly direct. She told UOL in 2015 that she had raised Carol herself from birth and described their bond as one of deep love. Being the main parent in her daughter’s daily life also made that attachment stronger.

Renato remained part of Carol’s life, and she became well known for her close relationship with her father. Carla also said in 2015 that her own relationship with Renato had settled into a friendship.

The family did sometimes appear together. At Carol’s 21st birthday celebration in May 2015, photographs showed her with both parents at the Hotel Fasano in Ipanema.

But Carla generally kept herself away from that kind of attention.

She told UOL that staying out of the public eye was a choice she had made after leaving television. That distinction is useful. Her disappearance from regular entertainment coverage was not proof that nothing was happening in her life. She simply stopped making publicity part of it.

Raising a Daughter Who Became Famous

Privacy became harder once Carol developed her own public profile.

Carol worked as a model and became a social-media personality. Her connection to Renato Gaúcho meant interest started early, long before influencer culture reached its current size.

Carla understood what media attention could do because she had already experienced it.

In 2015, she said she worried about her daughter’s exposure but also believed Carol was level-headed and understood the press. Her own parenting style sounded familiar enough. Carla joked that she was the kind of mother who kept giving advice and admitted she could be jealous and protective.

There was still room for disagreement.

Carol told Terra in 2013 that she admired her mother but wished she had never abandoned television. That comment gives their story a little more texture. Carla saw retreating from TV as the right response to unwanted attention. Her daughter could respect the reason while still thinking the career itself deserved to continue.

Their lives took different paths around fame.

Her Role in Carol’s Early Modeling Experience

Carla also appears in one important story from Carol’s teenage years.

In a 2024 interview covered by Gshow, Carol said her mother took her to a well-known modeling agency in Rio when she was about 15. The visit did not go as planned. Carol said an agency representative told her that she was attractive but that her face was too round and that she needed to lose weight.

Carol later connected that incident with insecurity about her appearance.

The story is worth handling carefully. Carla taking her teenage daughter to a modeling agency does not mean she caused the body-image problem Carol later described. The damaging remark, according to Carol’s account, came from the person evaluating her at the agency.

What the episode does show is that Carla was involved during the early stage of her daughter’s interest in modeling.

Years later, Carol built a public identity very different from her mother’s. She embraced social media and continued appearing in entertainment coverage, while Carla mostly stayed outside it.

Life After Television

Leaving television did not mean Carla stopped working.

By March 2015, she was running or working through a press relations operation and handling communications for several companies. UOL described her as responsible for corporate communication work after her years on television.

That transition makes sense given her background. Reporting teaches people how newsrooms work, what editors need, how stories are framed, and how information moves. Press relations uses many of those skills from the opposite side.

Later that same year, another story revealed a less predictable turn.

In December 2015, R7 reported that Carla was looking for work as a salesperson in Rio de Janeiro because she wanted a fixed income. The outlet, citing Extra, said she was then living with Carol in a Leblon apartment that Renato had purchased.

It is a striking detail because celebrity coverage often creates the impression that anyone connected to a famous athlete must live without ordinary financial concerns. Carla’s search for salaried work did not fit that easy story.

And perhaps that is why the detail has stuck around.

Why Did Carla Leave Television?

The short answer came from Carla herself.

Once her relationship with Renato and her pregnancy became press stories, she felt uncomfortable continuing as a journalist who presented other people’s news. She believed her new position on the other side of media coverage created a conflict she did not want.

That decision appears to have been personal rather than the result of losing her ability to work on television.

Her career before leaving was already broad. She had reported in the field, anchored news, handled special events, appeared on different networks, and worked on several programs.

Still, stepping away carried consequences.

By 2013, Carol was openly saying she wished her mother had stayed in the profession. Carla herself spoke warmly about her television years when interviewed in 2015. Neither comment sounds like someone who hated broadcasting.

Sometimes a career ends because the work stops fitting the person’s life. Carla’s story seems closer to that than to a conventional retirement.

Her Relationship With Carol Today

Public reporting continues to identify Carla primarily through her connection with Carol, but the relationship between the two predates all the celebrity coverage surrounding the Portaluppi name.

Carla said she raised her daughter from birth and remained highly involved as Carol grew into adulthood. Older photographs show them together, and Carol has publicly discussed her mother’s decisions and influence on her early life.

Carol’s public career has kept the family name in Brazilian entertainment and sports coverage. She remains strongly linked with Renato and football culture, even as she has built her own audience. In 2026, Gshow was still covering her activities in Rio, including surfing at Ipanema Beach.

Carla, by comparison, has remained far less public.

That contrast may be the clearest way to understand mother and daughter. One spent her early career in front of television cameras and later chose distance. The other grew up around that experience and moved toward a highly visible life of her own.

Calling Carla only “Carol Portaluppi’s mother” leaves out a substantial part of the story.

Before Carol became known and before her relationship with Renato turned into entertainment news, Carla had already worked inside Brazilian television journalism. She went from overnight newsroom duties to field reporting, then to the anchor desk. Her work crossed Rede Manchete, Record, and TVE.

Her later communications work also shows that journalism was more than a brief appearance on television.

Yet much of the public record still circles back to Renato and Carol. That is partly the result of Carla’s own decision to stay private. She did not spend the following decades trying to rebuild a celebrity profile or repeatedly retell a famous relationship.

In her 2015 interview, she described herself as very private after television. She was also single at the time and joked that she still hoped to marry someday, even if it happened when she was much older.

It is an oddly ordinary detail to end on, which fits her story rather well. After years of television studios, football headlines, and public judgment, Carla seemed more interested in choosing what happened off camera.
